Obituary of Sophia Kircos
January 15, 1931 - June 7, 2025
Sophia Kircos. Age 94 of New Boston.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend of many, Sophia passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025 at the age of 94. She insisted the 96 age given in some papers is just wrong. Her strong directive was that her gravestone has January 15, 1931, NOT January 15, 1929 as her birthdate and it came with threats from beyond the grave if her children did not heed her wish.
Sophia had four boys, Demetrios of blessed memory (Fotina) and Lazaros (Paula), were born in Greece. She was pregnant with John (Violet) on the voyage across the Atlantic to their new home in the United States. John and fourth-born Chris of blessed memory were born American citizens.
She is survived by her husband Angelo, having recently celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary. Sophia is also survived by her sister Mary (Tom), brother John (Jane) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sophia was predeceased by her parents Catherine and Chris Ouzas, and her sisters Domna (John) and Elefteria (Alex).
Sophia had only a second-grade education, a custom for the girls in Proti Village in Greece at the time she was born, but her wisdom was strong. She spoke three languages and taught herself to read English while raising those angelic energetic boys.
She worked alongside her husband Angelo at Delray Bakery for many years and when Chris opened Old Delray Bakery, she had lots of advice for him, too.
She loved the people at St. George church in Southgate and enjoyed working alongside the many members of the Philoptochos making pastries, spinakopita and tyropita for the annual Greek Festivals.
She traveled with Angelo to Greece many times, but also to Constantinople, Egypt, the Holy Land and to Australia.
Sophia had strong views and she gave her advice - often, but whether you followed her wishes or not, in the end her abundance of love overpowered all. For her family, her love and willing sacrifice was limitless.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Sophia may be made to the Philoptochos of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 16300 Dix-Toledo Road, Southgate, MI 48195.
