Obituary of Maria Espinoza
May 14, 1929 – December 11, 2025
Maria Hortencia Espinoza, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, public servant, and woman of deep faith, passed away on December 11, 2025, in Wyandotte, Michigan, at the age of 96.
Maria was born on May 14, 1929, in Webb County, Texas. In 1969, she moved from Texas to Detroit, Michigan, and later made her home in Southgate, where she became a deeply rooted and widely respected member of the community.
For nearly 20 years, Maria served the people of Michigan at the Southgate branch of the Michigan Secretary of State. Under her leadership, the Southgate office became the first Michigan Secretary of State branch to offer services in Spanish. As a result, branches across the State would direct Spanish-speaking residents to the Southgate branch. Throughout her career, she was regularly commended for her excellence, integrity, and tireless service to the entire community, and especially for her advocacy and care for the Hispanic community in Detroit and Downriver. She received numerous awards and commendations for her decorated career, including formal recognitions from the Governor of Michigan and the Michigan Secretary of State. She retired in 2002 after years of faithful public service.
Maria’s leadership and service extended far beyond her professional work. In 1999, she was named one of 1,000 Latino Leaders in the United States by the Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. That same year, she received the Reconocimiento Ohtli, one of the highest honors awarded by the Government of Mexico to citizens living abroad, recognizing individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving and uplifting the Mexican and Mexican-American community. She was also honored as Mexican of the Year by the Consulate of Mexico and the Centro Mexicano de Michigan.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Maria loved the Lord Jesus Christ and lived out her faith in tangible ways, through compassion, generosity, and a bold witness to those around her. She cared for people in her local community, deeply loved every member of her family, opened her home and heart to others, and shared her faith freely with everyone she knew. She was active in church throughout her life and found great joy in listening to pastors and priests, always eager to grow in her love for God and others.
Maria is survived by her children: Andres (Julie) Espinoza Jr., Jose (Linda) Espinoza, Gerardo (Kelly) Espinoza, and Sandra Lysogorski; her grandchildren: John John Lysogorski, Nicole Espinoza, Lindsey Swingle, Jessica Espinoza, Benjamin Espinoza (Hannah), and Gabrielle Espinoza; and her great-grandchildren: James Joseph Smith (affectionately known to Maria as “JJ”), Kaiden Jerry Swingle, Lacy Anella Swingle, Leonardo Brady Espinoza, Elijah Patrick Espinoza, and Mateo Andrés Espinoza. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Trinidad and Maria Del Refugio Meza, and brother, Jose Efrain Meza, Sr.
Maria will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her devotion to her family, her love for her community, and her lifelong commitment to serving others with dignity, excellence, and grace. Her legacy of faith, service, and leadership will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Maria's honor may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 14101 Superior Street, Southgate, Michigan, 48195.
