Obituary of Nellie J. Muncy
May 29, 1946 – January 30, 2026
Nellie Jean Muncy, 79, of Pilgrim, Kentucky passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2026 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Born and raised in Martin County, Kentucky, Nellie carried the heart and spirit of Appalachia with her throughout her life - strong, independent, and full of grit.
The only daughter among six brothers - Bear, Blondie, Tootsie, Grover, Eugene, and Junior - Nellie grew up learning perseverance, toughness, and resilience, qualities she carried into every chapter of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Columbus Muncy and Laude Steele (Moore), and many of her siblings, leaving behind her brother Bear (James), sisters-in-law Mabel and Betty, her lifelong companion Zane Speer, and numerous nieces and nephews across the country.
Nellie was a devoted mother to Wally Murdock and Ruth Balsis, and she shared a close bond with her former daughter-in-law, Regina. She was the proud and loving Nana to her four granddaughters, Madisyn, Madison (Michael), Macy, and Makenna, who were the joy of her life.
Her family was at the center of everything she did. Nellie had a generous and kind heart, always ready to help others, whether family, friends, or her community. She lived life with courage, compassion, and unwavering love, teaching those around her the importance of strength, loyalty, and kindness.
Nellie spent her remaining time in Michigan surrounded by the love and care of her children and grandchildren before her heavenly descent. She will be remembered for her fierce love, her Appalachian pride, her caring and the warmth she brought into every life she touched.
Celebration of life for her Kentucky family in Warfield, Kentucky will be held at a later date.
