Obituary of James M. Bely
James Michael Bely
July 11, 1947 – April 18, 2026
On April 18, 2026, we lost James Michael Bely, a man deeply loved by many and remembered for his kindness, faith, and unwavering dedication to others.
Jim was the beloved longtime companion and best friend of 37 years to Mauna Austin. He was a loving father figure to Tina (Frank) Fodo and Regina Billmaier, and a proud “Papa” to Edward, Frankie, and Meadow. He was the dearest, younger brother of Marilyn (the late George) Wootton, and proudly served as godfather and uncle to Audra (Laurence) Dorazio, and cherished uncle to Christin (Marc) Bracken, and Victoria Wilson (Steve Smith). He is also survived by his step-sister in-law Sharon Vagi and her family, and was a great-uncle to Dharma & Veenapani Dorazio, Fiona, Tiernan, and Lochlann Bracken, and Rebekah Wilson. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Anna V. (Bely) Vagi; his father, Anthony J. Bely; and his dogs: Timber, Coco, Crystal, Buddy and Tippy.
Born on July 11, 1947, Jim grew up in Allen Park and graduated in 1965 from Melvindale High School. Those who knew Jim understood his deep love for family, friends, and his fellow service members. A man of strong faith and quiet commitment, he lived a life centered on helping others.
Jim proudly served in the United States Air Force as a military police officer from 1966-1970. He later built a long career at Ford Motor Company, where he retired after 30+years of service. His compassion and gift for connection led him to continue serving his community as a driver for Molnar Funeral Homes and as a bus driver for Wyandotte Seniors and recently worked at Wyandotte Golf Course to stay busy.
Jim found joy in life’s simple pleasures—sailboats, fishing, a great game of euchre (or any card game), he loved his cars which he kept meticulous and time spent on the golf course. He also loved to travel and reconnect with his service brothers, friendships he held close to his heart. He will be deeply missed by all that were blessed to know him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Food Pantry where Jim would donate bi-monthly to support those in need in the community.

Our History
John Molnar, Sr. opened the Detroit Hungarian Funeral Home, now the Molnar Funeral Homes, in 1923. The funeral home began in his home until relocating across the street to it's Delray location at 8623 Dearborn Avenue, in 1936. He had a strong work ethic and believed that you should never stop learning...
