Obituary of Kurt Fritz
June 15, 1954 - May 11, 2026
Kurt Fritz. Age 71 of Brownstown Twp MI passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026 at Wyandotte Hospital.
Kurt was born on June 15, 1954 at Grace Hospital in Detroit, MI to Melville (Mel) & Dolores Fritz. He attended Michigan Technological University (MTU) on a football scholarship and pursued a career with the Veterans Administration Medical Center as a Medical Technologist. First in Allen Park and then in Detroit for over 30 years.
Kurt was a talented athlete. He excelled not only in football growing up but also baseball and basketball at Redford Union High School where he still holds many of their records to this day. He actually met Debbie on a bowling team for the VA. In 1972, his first year at MTU, they won their Division Conference Championship with an undefeated season. After college, he also still enjoyed playing on softball and golf teams.
Kurt was endlessly curious about everything. If you wanted an obscure fact, he would know what the answer was. He could hear a song and would immediately know the name and who was the singer. He loved to quiz people to see if they knew what he was talking about. He loved nature and science and would often talk about all the places he wanted to go and visit.
Before his health problems, he and Debbie loved to travel. They traveled all over the Michigan Upper Peninsula, visited Arizona, Florida, Mexico and Jamaica.
Beloved partner of Debbie Smerigan for 44 years, Brother of Karl Fritz (Gale Frentz) and Sister Carol Potere (Jeff), Larry Smerigan (Judy), Ron Smerigan (Connie), Denise Sikora (Ed) and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mel and Dolores Fritz, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held on May 28th, 2026 between 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM at Molnar Funeral Home, Brownstown Chapel, 23700 West Road, Brownstown, MI 48183
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the family or your favorite charity in Kurt's memory.
