Obituary of Robert J. McGrath

March 28, 1925 – September 13, 2020

 

Robert J. McGrath.  Age 95 of Wyandotte.

 

Beloved husband of Margaret McGrath.  Loving father of Kathleen Morris, Michael (Ruth) McGrath, Terrence (Lori) McGrath, Patricia (Christopher) Auger, Daniel McGrath and Kevin (Roslyn) McGrath.  Also survived by 13 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.  Preceded in death by his parents Joseph & Verna McGrath, siblings Mary Olive, Verna, Quirk and Shirley and 2 infant children; Rose Marie and John.

 

Robert was a member of the Wyandotte Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Downriver Genealogical Society and previously a very active early member of the Gabriel Richard H. S. Booster Club while his children were in sports.

 

Family Tribute 

 

Robert was born on March 28, 1925, to Joseph and Verna McGrath in Wyandotte, Michigan, where he was also raised.


In March 1943 Robert was sworn into the United States Navy for four years of service. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in June 1943 and was called into active duty with the United States Navy Air Corps on July 1st to serve during World War II. The formal peace treaty with Japan was signed on September 2, 1945.  With the war over, the Navy was no longer in need of pilots. Robert was given the opportunity to be separated from the Navy immediately or remain for the remainder of his enlistment time. He chose to leave and went back to college to pursue his degree. Robert graduated from the University of Detroit on June 14, 1950 with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.


Robert played baseball for St. Patrick’s High School, the Navy, and The University of Detroit. Robert and Margaret Lauzon were married on September 30, 1950. They were close to celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary at the time of his passing. Robert worked for Great Lakes Steel as an engineer for his entire career which spanned 37 plus years. During his retirement, he kept busy with reading, his hobby of genealogy, and traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.
