Obituary of Lorraine C. Stone

January 29, 1926 – December 7, 2020

Lorraine C. Stone. Age 94 of Woodhaven.

Beloved wife of the late Clifton Earl Stone.  Loving mother of Clifton Harold (Catherine) Stone.  Dearest grandmother of Krysta (Matt Derda) Stone and Wendy (Ricardo) Cotto.  Dear sister of Lillian Jones, Rowena Caperton, Edna Hill and Sue Vaughn.

A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, infant Beulah Mae Cunningham, Ruby Stockman, Mildred Kirby, Myrtle Lee, and brothers Kenneth Cunningham and Arthur Lane Cunningham, Jr.

Lorraine was born & raised in Sparta, Tennessee, moving to Detroit, Michigan, as a young adult to find work. She and her late husband, Clifton, also a Tennessee native, lived in Detroit for many years. They were married for 61 years at the time of Clifton’s passing. In addition to raising her son, Clifton Harold, she worked at a bakery, a machine shop, and various other jobs. She often remarked on the strong partnership she had with Clifton, and that they equally shared many of the responsibilities of home life. In their retirement years, they enjoyed gardening, daily walks at Fairlane Mall, and meeting friends for breakfast at McDonald’s.

Very active well into her 90s, Lorraine enjoyed walking, cooking, tending to her home, working outside, and dining out with her dear friend, Joanne. She loved to pass the time doing Word Find, or hunting for the needle in Country magazine. She also enjoyed watching the Detroit sports teams, especially the Tigers.

Lorraine will be remembered for her love of her family, including the extended family created by in-laws, friends & neighbors. She enjoyed baking and cooking for them and always appreciated sharing a meal with her friends and family. Her pumpkin rolls & rice krispie treats were specialties she shared as gifts with family, friends & neighbors for many occasions.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed shopping trips and lunch at Hudson’s/Macy’s with her daughter-in-law, granddaughters, niece, and niece-in law. She never missed her annual holiday shopping to spoil her great-nieces and nephews, even into her later years. She especially enjoyed young children, and remarked often that “they made her day.” Her faith and the fellowship of her longtime church community at Church of Christ in Madison Heights, Michigan, were very important to her and Clifton, and she maintained close relationships with friends there.

Lorraine will be remembered fondly for her sense of humor and her unending love and devotion to her family. “Give each other a hug for me."
