Obituary of Catherine H. Schmidt

January 19, 1922 - March 18, 2021

Catherine H. Schmidt.  Age 99 of Southgate.

Beloved wife of the late Dominic Schmidt.  Loving mother of James (Barbara) Schmidt.  Dearest grandmother of  Robert, Gregory (Melissa), Steven, Rosalie and McKenzie.  Great grandmother of 5.  Preceded in death by parents Dominik and Katie Yost, children Suzanne Cummins, Jeannette Reaume and Nancy Stewart and granddaughter Lynea.

Memorial contributions are appreciated to St. Pius X Catholic Church or Elara Caring Hospice. 

In accordance with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Orders - The Molnar Funeral Homes is following and observing the 25 person cap on funeral attendance at one time. We are also practicing social distancing and masks are required for every person entering the building. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.

Family Tribute ~

Catherine Schmidt was born on January 19th, 1922 in Laserfeldt (Laseravich) Yugoslavia to Dominik and Katerina (nee: DeCoursey) Yost.  Dominik emigrated to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1929 and two years later his wife and three daughters, Anna, Katerina and Susanne followed.  Upon arriving at customs in New York, Katerina Helena’s name was anglicized to Catherine Helen.  In 1933 the family moved from Saskatchewan to Leamington, Ontario.  She met her future husband, Dominic Schmidt at a family friends house in Wyandotte Michigan in 1939 and they were married in Leamington in 1942.  

Catherine became a US citizen in 1944.  After the war, she and Dom raised their 4 children in Wyandotte.  

She is predeceased by her husband Dominic and her daughters, Suzanne Kathleen (Cummins), Jeannette Marie (Reaume) and Nancy Lea (Stewart) and granddaughter Lynea.  She is survived by her son James Allen Schmidt, 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
