Obituary of Mary D. Reidy
July 23, 1924 - June 12, 2021
Mary Dolores Reidy. Age 96 of Wyandotte.
Beloved wife of the late John August Reidy. Loving mother of John Patrick (Lorraine) Reidy, James (the late Marcia) Reidy, Dr. Rich (Erin) Reidy, Molly (Dr. Patrick) Mech, Michael Reidy, Charles (Pamela) Reidy, Joseph (Mary Jane) Reidy, Eileen (David) Ellis and the late Timothy Reidy. Survived by 25 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by great grandson, Ivan James Reidy.
Mary Reidy was raised in Highwood, IL. After graduating from Barat College, she became an elementary school teacher in Libertyville, IL. As a young woman, Mary chased her dreams of travel and took an opportunity to teach Army children in occupied Japan after WWII. During the first days of her adventure she met John August on the ship as they crossed the Pacific Ocean. They married in 1951 and moved to Wyandotte to raise their family.
Mary loved spending time on the golf course; in fact, she made five holes-in-one throughout her lifetime. She was a skilled baker and pie maker. Her brownies often disappeared before they left the oven. A woman with a strong faith in God and a large family, she could feed the masses with five loaves and two fishes, which she often did.
Many days were spent on the front porch of 152 Walnut surrounded by family and friends, enjoying conversation and laughter. Her family members say there is no way to put into words how much she loved them and made each of them feel treasured. Mary had a true servant’s heart. Taking care of her family was her mission in life and she did it with grace, passion and love.
Memorial contributions are appreciated to the Irish Pallottine Missionary Center.
