Family Tribute
Marion grew up in Northern Michigan, specifically Mancelona and Central Lake. At a young age Marion learned how to ice skate and roller skate. She admitted she was pretty good at it. In school she played the trumpet and at church she played the piano and organ. She married her high school sweetheart William (Bill) Sumner Sr., August 3,1946. She considered herself an “Irish Hillbilly” who loved life! She had a spitfire spirit and even at 95 she would tell us she was “still kickin’”.
She loved her children and grandchildren and at family gatherings she would always say “I made all of you and started this mess!” She enjoyed watching her grandson Brad and then later her grandsons Billy and Chris play ice hockey. She played “garage” hockey with them every morning before school. She proudly attended dance recitals for her granddaughters Dawn and Amee and cheer competitions for her granddaughter Kelli.
She truly enjoyed cooking for her family and was so proud when her girls started cooking her recipes for their families. The all-time favorite of every child, grandchild and great grandchild was her “world famous” pumpkin roll. She often made and gave them as Christmas presents.
She loved Nascar and for many years she camped at the racetrack with her daughter Teresa, son in law Glenn, grandchildren Greg, Stephanie and Robert, along with her great grandkids. They had season pit row terrace seats so she could be close to the action. She was an avid Rusty Wallace fan and a proud member of his fan club. She also enjoyed BBQs with daughter Valerie, son-in-law Ron, and grandchildren Michelle and Ronnie.
She had a soft spot in her heart for any and all animals. She loved dogs and cats specifically. She loved her Nuisance, Garfield and Porcia (cats) as well as her Mitzi pup, Gunner and Joey (dogs). Every time she saw a man with a beard, whether she knew him or not, she had to stop, “pet it” and purr like a kitten.
In her later years she proudly boasted that she gave up TAM (tobacco, alcohol, and men). She would never leave home without her Gameboy or a clipboard and puzzle book. She kept her mind sharp up to the very end
