Family Tribute

Romulo Hernandez was born in 1935 in a ranch called Cerro de los Hernandez in Arandas, Jalisco Mexico along with his eight brothers and one sister. He made his way to Detroit Michigan in the 1950’s and brought his love for Mariachi music with him. He went on to be a part of a Mariachi group with some of his brothers and this would be a passionate part of his life for 60+ years.

Romulo made his home in Southwest side of Detroit working various factory jobs. The two he was most proud of was working for GM at their Fleetwood plant and eventually retiring from Heublein Bottling company.

His pride and joy was being a loving father and grandfather to his three daughters and six grandchildren. He enjoyed picking the kids up from school and taking them to have happy meals on Fridays! Cooking authentic Mexican meals like Pollo en Mole, Tamales and Caldo de Res for his family was one of his favorite things to do!

Romulo stayed busy doing things he loved. He liked taking daily jogs around Patton Park, making Mexican candy such as Dulce de Leche and Dulce de Camote and selling them to the local business in the city. He also loved watching Baseball and cheering on his Detroit Tigers and would frequently go to the Horse Racing track with his brothers and mother. He made many trips back to his family ranch in Mexico which brought him so much joy.

The most important thing to him was his catholic faith. Romulo was a long-time parishioner of Basilica of St. Anne de Detroit. He would pray the rosary in the morning and read his prayer book at night.

Romulo made many friends along the way, he sang many songs for families, and he would always tell silly jokes just to make anyone smile. He will be greatly missed by the family he left behind, but his memory will always be in our hearts.

Memorial contributions are appreciated to Alzheimer’s Association.
