ANDERINE GANT (DOXTATER)
July 12, 1941-July 12, 2024
With profound sadness and hearts full of cherished memories, we announce the passing of Anderine Gant (Doxtater).
Anderine “Nama” Gant, age 83, of Flat Rock, passed away during the early morning hours of July 12, 2024. She is survived by her children, A. Jacqueline Gant and M. Keith Gant; daughter-in-law Norma Gant; beloved grandchildren, Kaitlin Gant, Kersten Gant, Blake Gant, and Damian Gant; sisters Joey Kechego and Carol (Maurice) Doxtater; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Montrae “Montie” Gant; sisters Maxine (Mervin) Chrisjohn, Winifred (Donald) Jacobs ; and brother Bob (Susan) Doxtater. She is deeply missed and will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
Anderine “Andygum" was born on July 12, 1941 in Ontario, Canada, to parents Matthew and Frances Doxtater. She grew up on the Oneida Nation of the Thames Reserve alongside her siblings, Maxine, Winifred, Joey, Bob, and Carol. She enjoyed writing and reading poetry, exploration, and spending time with family and friends.
In 1959, Anderine married the love of her life, the late Montrae “Montie” Gant. The pair settled in Detroit and raised their two children, Jackie Gant and Keith Gant. In 1993, her daughter-in-law, Norma Gant, joined her family. She spent countless hours with her family aboard the “La Bonne Vie” on boating and fishing adventures. Anderine loved making people laugh, storytelling, and lending a helping hand in times of need. She was loved by everyone she knew and added her special flair to every celebration.
Anderine worked as a legal secretary, typist, entrepreneur, and alterations seamstress. In 1995, Anderine was promoted to her most treasured position, Nama and caregiver to her grandchildren, Kaitlin Gant, Kersten Gant, Blake Gant, and Damian Gant. She loved to read to and teach her grandchildren, make crafts, and take them on adventures. She spent countless hours teaching her special needs grandson, Damian, skills to live more independently. She was known as Nama to her grandchildren, their friends, neighborhood children, and nearly everyone she met.
The world is a little dimmer, and gatherings are less jovial, without her fun-loving and radiant presence. Her light continues to shine through her loved ones left behind and all who knew her. We find comfort in knowing that she is dancing, singing her favorite songs, watching over her family with the same boundless love she shared during her lifetime, and reuniting with her husband on their yacht in Lake Erie, fishing in the Atlantic, and going to the casino.
