Obituary of Robert Mattern

April 14, 1943 – December 28, 2024

Robert Mattern.  Age 81 of Grosse Ile.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Mattern, a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Bob passed away Saturday, December 28th at the age of 81 after a life devoted to his family, his career, and his community.

Born April 14th in 1943, Bob graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1961 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Accounting from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1967. His academic journey also included studies at the University of Detroit and Henry Ford Community College.

Bob began his professional career in March 1967 at General Motors, ultimately retiring from Ford Motor Company in March 2007 after a distinguished 40-year career as a Systems Analyst. Beyond his professional life, Bob was deeply committed to serving his community. He volunteered tirelessly at St. Joseph Church of St. Vincent Pallotti, where he served on the finance committee, on the funeral luncheon team, and was Chairman for the annual Spring Fling’s patrons brochure. His leadership extended to being on the board of Advantage One Credit Union and assisting seniors with Medicare counseling through The Senior Alliance.

A nature enthusiast, Bob loved gardening, woodworking, skiing, traveling across the globe, and camping. His practical problem-solving skills were unmatched, and his knack for making life simpler for those around him earned him admiration from family and friends alike.

Bob's devotion to his family was unparalleled. He never missed a school or sporting event for his children or grandchildren, attending whenever he could, regardless of how he was feeling.

He shared countless cherished moments with his family, especially around the kitchen table for family game ‘nights’. Board games and card games are a central part of family gatherings. Special memories of playing Connect 4 with his children when they were young come to mind; and later enjoying many spirited rounds of ever-changing lists of games with his grandchildren, culminating in his infamous ban from Clue since he had a tendency to accidentally spoil the game results if he made a wrong guess! Sudoku was another of Bob’s passions, and he enthusiastically taught the puzzle to his grandchildren.

His favorite saying when something went missing—“It will turn up eventually”—was often proven true, to the amusement (and occasional frustration) of his wife, Adrienne.

Bob's warmth and dedication to his family and community will be deeply missed. He was a protector, a mentor, and above all, a kind and gentle soul.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Adrienne, his children Robert Stephen Mattern, Donald (Denise) Mattern, Brian (Heather) Mattern, and his grandchildren, Samantha, Jacob, Benjamin, Katie and Brennan.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Angela Hospice or to St. Joseph's St. Vincent Pallotti Church for Masses in Bob's honor. Donation envelopes for Masses will be available at the funeral home.

Bob’s legacy of love and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A luncheon will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Hall, beginning at approximately 12:30 PM.  All are welcome to attend.  If not processing to the cemetery, please feel free to assemble in the hall for coffee to await the luncheon.
