Dad,
It has been 3 weeks and it doesn't get any easier. There are not to many things that I have to tell you, being abe to spend so much time with you and Mom the past 2 years there isn't much to say that we haven't already discussed. Mom said this only stays up for a month so I figured I better write something in case you actually get to read this shit in heaven.
Like you have always taught us, we are only down on this earth for a very short time and everyday we should try to make a difference in someones life. You never had a problem doing that for the 53 years I have been down here, because everyday of my life you made a difference to me. Just walking in the door and seeing your smile or hearing your kind words made every day that I got to share with you special.
I will miss your love of life, our time spent fishing and solving the wolds problems, your laugh, teaching us when its family its ok for guys to hug and kiss guys. Our rides to Sonic and the smile on your face when you would ask for two straws so you could shoot the paper at me when I was driving. I will mostly miss the lessons in life talks about taking care of everyone you meet, and how you never know by making someone smile if it made what would have been a bad day into a good one. I feel confident that I will be able to raise the kids to grow up to be something in life so that you can look down and be as proud as you always were.
So in ending, I am not sure you read these in heaven, but they are words I tell you each night I pray so I am sure God will relay the message. If not you know him and I will but heads when I get up there. Enjoy the after life Marine, you went out with a beautiful Marine Ceremony. I could see you smiling with how organized and crisp everything went.
Don't worry about a thing down here. We will take great care of mom, and as always we will take care of each other and have each others backs. That I promise Sir!
I love you, and will forever miss you. See you on the other side Marine!

Smokey, The only joy i get out of this, is that your probably with my Dad
(Butch Watters), thinking of you guys are having a beer, golfing or playing cards, together again. I walked into a thrift store a few years ago, and i heard someone whistling, I immediately thought "Dad"?. I go down the isles looking to see who it was. and it was you! We hugged and laughed and dropped names. I will miss seeing you on Fridays at the Trolley Stop for fish fry. Every time i saw you and Margaret, i would have happy memories of my dad and you together. Our thoughts, prayers, and hugs go out to all of you. Smokey was a character. Bigger than life and always chipper. A wonderful man who saw the glass half full rather than half empty. Always upbeat, willing to lend a hand to help with anything; sharing with all his whistle as he worked! What a blessing it has been to have known him and have claimed his friendship. Dear Margaret, My dad and I are so sorry to learn of your loss of dear Smokey. He was such a great guy, and we so enjoyed our many conversations with him at the FMB Moose. The first time he noticed Dad wearing his Marine cap, Smokey came over to introduce himself as a fellow Marine and struck up a friendship. He always made a point of coming over to talk to him at the lodge and he often sent dad materials about the Corps. We have missed seeing him these last few years.
