Let me tell you about my Uncle Pete... When I was 10 years old I wanted to run away (haha) I wanted to move from Alabama to Michigan to live with my Uncle Pete... When I was 9 or 10 years old Uncle Pete came to visit us in Alabama. I remember seeing this Corvette pull up in our driveway and to hear the rumble from the pipes he had me hooked. I wanted to be like my Uncle Pete.
See when you are little and seem to be getting in the way of everything and that one older person who treats you with kindness and listens to you and talks to you as if you were an adult, well that means everything and that is exactly how Uncle Pete has always treated me.
Uncle Pete and my mom (Pam) and my dad (Jim Henderson) were very close and as I got older Uncle Pete and I would talk more often and I always enjoyed hearing the stories of my dad and the fun/trouble he would get into. Uncle Pete was the last person to speak with my dad before he passed and afterwards is when he and I started talking more often. My mom had become ill and moved in with us last year and Uncle Pete would call every other week or so to talk with mom and he would also call and check on me. When he called it was at a minimum of an hour long call and I didn't mind at all.
I looked forward to our talks about cars, tractors and one day when I told him that my wife Tammy and I were painting my old truck (we have never painted a vehicle in our life) he was there with the best advise. He told me about painting Donna's VW Yellow and that when you paint you put music on and paint as if you were dancing back and forth to the music.
Uncle Pete and I were a lot alike, We both enjoy the challenge of trying to fix things. One of my last conversation we had he had told me what the doctors had said. I had no word other than to tell him "there are some things that we can't fix", although my wheels were spinning trying to think of something, and it sux that there are things beyond our control.
I will always remember our calls, they usually started with him laughing to the point I started laughing at him (Donna I know where you got it now), I will keep our talks, advice and memories of him forever in my heart.
Donna, Lori and family, I am only a call or text away if you ever need me and I hope to stay in touch a little more often and pass along advice that was given to me if ever needed. Also I will be glad to talk about my Yellow Corvette at anytime, haha
Love,
Kip Henderson
